Castalia Outdoors announces a bombshell – Bombshell Turtle that is. This new soft plastic fishing lure has a unique shape that is irresistible to fish. Why a turtle fishing lure? Throughout the history of evolution bass and even saltwater species have aggressively attacked juvenile turtles in the wild. Both fresh and salt water Game fish despise egg-raiding turtles, attacking them aggressively year-round.

Aggressiveness by bass toward juvenile turtles has been well documented for more than 35 years in films featuring largemouth bass behavior – bringing many to ask, what took so long to make the lure?
Bombshell Turtle | Bombshell Crab

Simply put – this new lure shape fills a missing link in the standard soft-plastic lure offering. 95% of the hits on this Bombshell Turtle is on the drop, so a tantalizing slow descent with its automatic leg action will draw more strikes. It can be rigged like many other soft plastic lures, “pop” the lure for multiple descents during the retrieve near underwater structure to lure big fish out of cover – let the lure do the work, pop and retrieve it s-l-o-w.

There is simply nothing like the Bombshell Turtle lure and it will prove to be your missing link to more and bigger fish.

Use a forward-weighted hook or Texas-rig it with the hook point up through the hook channel for weedless fishing. The hook channel allows easy hook sets and the concave belly allows it to be skipped under docks or in mangroves to reach fish. When rigged, the Bombshell Crab’s claws will rise in a defensive position – much like a live crab, creating a natural presentation and producing maximum strike responses from game fish such as redfish, snook, trout and more.

BOMBSHELL – THE PERFECTLY “FISHABLE” REALISTIC LURE
Bombshell lures are easily rigged and have special features like a saucer-like belly that enable either bait to be “skip-cast” under structures such as docks or mangroves. The like-like features draw strikes and the hook channel allows easy hook-sets and weedless fishing.

The Sharkfin FD2000 and FD 4000 “fins” are tapered underneath much like the wing of an airplane. So as the line exits the spool during the cast there is the least amount of friction on the line as possible. Line exiting the Sharkfin spool during casting is near silent – while on a standard round spool you will hear the definite sound of friction.

How The Sharkfin Reduces Tangles

Problem: During the retrieve on traditional spinning reels, loops are inevitably formed when small increments of slack line are reeled onto the spool. With a standard round spool, these loops often crawl together forming a twisted loop that protrudes beyond the spool’s lip. During the next cast, a high-speed, high-energy line is pulled tightly against the spool lip, engaging this protruding loop and snatching it and all the line spooled on top of this loop off in the form of a “birdnest.”

Solution: With the Sharkfin, when slack line is inadvertently wound onto the spool, it is retained by the fins, often resulting in the line skipping one or two of the fins along the face of the spool. This “catch” eliminates any twist or looping of slack line, and this excess line is freely released on the next cast without incident.

Why The Sharkfin Reduces Line Wear

Friction during casting heats and degrades fishing line as it quickly exits the typical round spool. With the Sharkfin spool design, line friction and heat are greatly reduced, thus minimizing line stress on every cast. Over time, you’ll realize that your line is lasting longer and staying fresh.

Sharkfin Reel – What the Pros Say

Thomas Maire, World and European casting champion from Germany, uses and recommends the Sharkfin Spinning Reel. He has competed world-wide and is a 3-time Gold World Games winner, 7-time World Champion, 9-time European Champion, and more than 40-time German Casting Champion.

Casting competitions bring together sport fishermen to showcase their abilities in distance and accuracy in three types of casting tackle applications: fly casting, fixed spool spin casting, and revolving spool spin casting. Both accuracy and distance make up each type of tackle application, with the distance portion including both single- and double-handed casting.
Fly casting competitions began in the U.S. in the 1860s, then expanded to revolving spool casting in the 1880s, then, after the invention of the fixed spool at the beginning of this century, included fixed spool competition. In the beginning, the sport took place on lakes or rivers, but with the need for accurate targets and measuring, the competitions switched to grassy fields. Close rules and regulations are followed and special tournament weights and flies are used without the use of hooks.

The casting sport was recognized by the Olympic Committee as an Olympic Sport in 1958, and is executed today among the non-Olympic sport events at the World Games. To be considered in Olympic games, 80 nations are required in tournament participation; the casting sport includes 30 participating nations.
— Thoams Maire – 3-time Gold World Games winner, 7-time World Champion, 9-time European Champion, and more than 40-time German Casting Champion

This reel is a Homerun, advantages: super smooth drag and superior casting distance. “I have two Sharkfin 2000′s and one 4000. I have put these reels to the test. I am a full time guide and I have done everything but run these reels over with my truck.”
— Capt. Dave Stephens, backbayxtremes

I recently fished with a guide in NC chasing redfish in the flats in and around Wilmington. He was a staff member for a few rod and reel companies but allowed me to bring a long my Sharkfins. By the end of the day he had removed his EXPENSIVE reels and swapped out for the Sharkfins! He had never seen anything cast that far that easy. Another convert!

Great Reel For a great price, I’ve been fishing with the sharkfin for about 2 months now and can not say I have had any problems. The new design makes the line shoot off of the spool allowing you to reach great distances in your cast. Also both the drag and retrieve are also smooth. If you want to gain some distance in your cast, and also have a very well made reel you should consider trying out one of these.
— Tim Landry, Ft Myers

Less tangles, longer casts – the Sharkfin reel is a great choice for those of us that like to make those long casts. This reel is gonna be hot on the tournament trails. It’s well made, smooth reeling in and also has a great drag system. This reel works great with braid or mono. Its worth giving a try.

This Real Deal, long distance casting, smooth drag.
First off, the design of the spool is unique and without a doubt the first time you cast one you will notice an increase in distance. Line literally just flies off the spool. With that said, don’t get too wrapped up in the spool because there is WAY more to this reel than an innovative spool design. Every feature of this reel is top notch from the drag all the way down to the sweet wooden handle.
When you hold one of these reels you can immediately tell the detail and design put into crafting it. The drag and retrieve on this reel are both super smooth. I’ve pulled monster reds on 8lb test out of structure with no problem using this reel. Line comes off the drag without hesitation and it reels as smooth as any reel I have owned.
Anybody who fishes shallow water and is looking for extra distance on the cast without compromising on other features of the reel, you have to try Sharkfin. Like I said, this reel is the real deal and don’t let the innovative design of the spool overshadow the other great features.

I’ve been fishing the Sharkfin reels for about 6 months now. I have the 2000 and the 4000 sizes, and find the smaller (2000) reel more than adequate for inshore species like redfish and spotted sea trout. The larger (4000) reel feels a bit bigger than most reels in that class (using Shimano numbers as a baseline for size measurement) and I’m waiting for tarpon season on the Gulf of Mexico this spring so I can give it a try on some 75-pound class fish. I’ve spooled the smaller reel with 10-pound braid and the larger one with 20-pound.
The most eye-catching feature of these reels is the design of the spools. The ‘shark fins’ serve to limit the line to spool contact, making for lengthy casts, and also serve to catch stray ‘loops’ of braided line before they can become those dreaded ‘line boogers’. When they catch a stray braided line loop (which WILL happen), the fins simply catch it, store it, and when you make the next cast, you cast it off.
Not only do these reels do their jobs as advertised, they look good and are nicely machined. I’m not good on tackle and don’t take special care with anyone’s reels. I fish saltwater and the reels are frequently sprayed by Gulf water when I’m running. And on return to the dock, if I have time I spray the reels with fresh water and give them a spritz of Blakemore’s Reel Magic and go on about my merry way. I don’t see any reason that i’ll have any more trouble with these reels than with their competitor’s counterparts and will likely have them cleaned and lubed every year or so.

— Capt. Tommy Thompson, SaltwaterAnglersGuide.com

A Must have! With this reel you will no longer get the famous “birds nest” or tangles you get from other reels. I fish from a kayak and dealing with a mess of braided line is not easy and sometimes impossible to get out when the knots get tight, thus cutting expensive braided line off your reel. This Reel really does cast further and smoother than other reels out on the market. Give this reel a try you won’t be disappointed.

Don’t miss this one! Longer casts, eliminates birds nests, line wears longer
“As soon as I picked this reel up I knew it was for me. So smooth you can’t believe it. No wobble, just a nice tight fit. When I spooled it with braid the spool looked like a brand new spool of thread – wound evenly and tightly on the spool.
It only takes one cast to realize you do not have to do anything but use the Sharkfin to achieve longer casts. As the line leaves the spool in an almost frictionless manner the only possible result is longer casts.
When you are fishing with this reel you will look down and notice line on the outside of the spool and around one of the fins. It looks strange, but all this means is that the fin caught loose line and instead of reeling it onto the spool it captured and held it until your next cast. So, instead of what all spinning reel users refer to as a “birds nest” all you get is another long cast. You get to keep fishing instead of dealing with knots and tangles.
This is one of the best innovations I have seen in a long time. I am already using both the 2000 and 4000 model. Mostly the 2000 for everyday fishing but I like to have the 4000 on hand when I run into some bigger fish.

Anglers, quickly and easily tie on the pre-rigged Liquid Steel Leader to provide the ultimate in strength and durability while taking advantage of the extra stealth and increased lure action afforded by this ultra-thin steel leader material. No twisting, crimping or clamping needed.

The ultra-thin diameter makes it more stealth in the water (compared to standard steel leader) yet provides the strength and durability you need. And the lower stretch (compared to fluorocarbon leader) allows for just the right sensitivity and quick hooksets.

Featuring German-engineered 1:19 braided steel, super strong and exceptional value. Available in single 15-, 19- and 27-inch lengths, and 8-, 12-, 17-, 24- and 30-lb test strengths. Diameters are .20-, .25-, .30-, .35- and .40-mm., respectively and options include various pre-rigged tackle configurations.

Harnessing Turtle Power for Largemouths?

by Joe Cermele

In just a few short weeks I’ll be hopping on a plane to Vegas to attend the annual ICAST show where tackle companies unveil all their latest wares. And right on que, my inbox is getting slammed with press releases tipping me off to the goodies I’ll see on the show floor. Today I received one from Castalia Outdoors regarding the Bombshell Turtle (below). Castalia’s catch phrase for this new soft-plastic is “Your Missing Link To Catching More Fish.”

Now I’ve seen soft-plastic lures that mimic everything from snakes to mice to life-size false albacore, but never before have I seen a soft-plastic turtle. In Castalia’s press release, they say:

“Aggressiveness by largemouth bass toward juvenile turtles has been well documented for more than 35 years in films featuring largemouth bass behavior – bringing many to ask, what took so long to make the lure?”

For all I know, these turtles may, in fact, become staples in the bass hunter’s tackle box, but I can state with certainty that in all the lakes, ponds, rivers, and sewer ditches behind the movie theater I’ve fish in my life, I do not ever recall seeing a baby turtle get attacked or yanked under by a bass. For the record, that’s not a knock on the lure. It could be that the bass in my waters don’t like turtles. But what about yours? Have you seen largemouths suck down a turtle here and there?

By the way, if you’re curious about the specs, these baits are three inches long, come in eight colors, and are best fished Texas rigged on a weighted jig hook, according to the company. READ MORE BOMBSHELL TURTLE

Select Walleye Winches

By Cory Schmidt

A good reel is a little like a comfortable pair of shoes. If it fits the way you fish, if it’s graceful and smooth and lasts a good long time, you’re probably going to buy the same one again – or at least another one from the same company – next time around. So it goes with walleye anglers.

When I first cast and retrieved a 3/8-ounce hair jig using a new Castalia Sharkfin 2000 last spring, it felt a little like I’d graduated to the Gibson Les Paul guitar equivalent of spinning reels.

The Sharkfin, which was designed in Germany, has curious “fins” on the outside lip of the spool to minimize contact and friction between line and spool. The result is a dramatic boost in casting distance, which you notice immediately. This also minimizes line coils and tangles.

Beyond that, the reel operates like greased lightning – it’s so smooth you hardly notice you’re turning the reel handle. For jigging and other presentations, this is a big deal, for reels play a much larger role in sensitivity than many of us realize. Any interruption – rough spot in the retrieve mechanism – means a loss of connection with your lure, and ultimately, the potential for missed strikes.

Ball bearings play a role, too. Not just how many are inside the reel, but what they’re made of (stainless steel is the standard) and whether or not they’re sealed and protected from debris. The Sharkfin has 9 stainless ball bearings plus a one-way roller bearing. The reel is saltwater-friendly, too, with the bearings and gears sealed and corrosion-proof, ensuring that the smooth drive system endures.

The other half of reel performance relates to drag function. Lots of reels have consistent, smooth drags that yield line without any hitches or rough spots. But also look for a drag that “starts” well. When you pull line to initially test and engage the drag, you don’t want it to require any more effort than it takes to peel line once the drag is moving. The Sharkfin offers a superlative drag that I rely on.

One thing most of us agree on is the need for top-end performance at a reasonable price. If you would have put the Sharkfin in my hands and asked me to guess its price, I would have named a $200 to $300 figure. Which is a gross overestimate. The Sharkfin 2000 sells for $119.

For casting jigs, swim baits, and plugs, the Castalia Sharkfin flings baits to the moon, while minimizing line tangles. Casting distance with most baits improves by 30 percent or more.

Time to step out of your “old shoes” perhaps, to try some of the new generation walleye winches – lighter, smaller, tougher, and in many cases more affordable than ever.

Well at the Pottsville markets recently I came across a Sharkfin reel and was very sceptical until the stallholder recognised me and after I had a touchy feely hands-on look he said to take the reel and give it a run.

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, somebody comes out with a barbless barb. The Maruto Semi-Barbless Treble Hook has a series of three nocks in the shank in place of a barb. Mike Richards, president of Castalia Outdoors (which represents Maruto), said the ridges help hold the hook in place with a friction, like the sole of a tennis shoe. “We can’t speak for everybody, but it should be legal in most areas where barbs are not,” Richards says. “With no barb to restrict penetration, hook-sets can be delivered with less power.” Maruto has been around for over 100 years, making some of the world’s finest hooks, but is just beginning to market in the U.S.

The new anodized aluminum, rubber gripped Castalia Outdoors Rubberized Easy Nets ($53.99 and $58.99) are the perfect nets in this new era where many Pacific Northwest fisheries are targeting hatchery fish while releasing wild fish of concern. They are compact for easy storage, and feature a wide net facing that opens and locks with a flip of the wrist. The rubber netting helps avoid hook tangles, easily sheds water and reduces storage odors.

Many tournament anglers are conservative-minded but can’t take the risk of losing fish with barbless hooks. Dohitomi’s new Maruto Semi-Barbless treble hooks claim to penetrate a fish’s jaws better than a barbed hook and to hold the fish equally well. In lieu of barbs are notches that Dohitomi claims “lock” into the bass’ mouth and hold it tight as long as pressure is applied. When pressure is releived – i.e., the fish is in the net – the notches “unlock” from the bass’ jaw. Semi-Barbless hooks also hold appeal to those who have dug a hook out of their own flesh. These hooks qualify as barbles from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, which recently imposed a barbless-hook-only restriction on parts of the Columbia River.

The Maruto Offset Worm Hook with Weedless Gap is destined to be a big hit in 2011. That’s the confident claim of its U.S. distributor Castalia Outdoors. Japanese company Maruto has been making high quality hooks for 100 years. This latest development uses a lower-angled bend at the eye to allow for a more horizontal fal of the lure and a smoother presentation with soft plastics.

What the makers say: “Sometimes it’s the smallest detail that can make a difference in how a lure performs. Lures such as worms and lizards will also slide into thick cover easier without the 90-degree bend that is common with other worm hooks.”

Castalia Outdoors’ Sharkfin reel is designed to be simpler and more efficient than a conventional spinning reel. The serrations on the top of the spool allow line to slide off and through the guides easier. Castalia claims the serrations result in longer, smoother casts, less line stress and greater accuracy.
Japanese Hook Innovation

Japan’s oldest hook manufacturer and brand, Maruto, has created what it believes to be the biggest innovation in hooks for years – the Maruto semi-barbless treble. “This is something that we think could change the market,” says Maruto’s managing director, Yoshi Dohi. “We have tested this hook to extremes.

“The hook has better penetration than any barbed treble on the market, and the serrations on the point of the hook do enough to hold the hook in place when a fish jumps and shakes its head; they act like Velcro.” Yoshi believes that the patented innovation can change the rod market too. He explains: “Over the years, rod actions have become faster and faster to set barbed hooks. It’s so easy to set these hooks that you can afford to use softer-actioned rods – bringing the enjoyment back to playing the fish.”

If so, perhaps one of the new hooks I found at the recent International Convention of Allied Sportsfishing Trades show in Las Vegas can improve your catch rate.

While untold numbers and varieties of hooks were displayed on the show floor, two caught my eye: the semi-barbless hook by Maruto Hooks . . . read more

Cermele: Getting To The New Point

When you walk the floor at ICAST, sometimes it’s easy to get drawn in by big, flashy things like lure tank tests and huge reel displays. If you don’t take the time to zoom in and focus on some little stuff, there is a good chance you’ll miss something noteworthy. Yesterday, I found myself at the Castalia Outdoors booth where they had some awesome new lures and reels, but what I liked most was their Maruto Semi-Barbless treble hooks. This is the kind of item you can skip over if you don’t slow down and really study everything.

These Japanese imports are made from high-carbon and are chemically sharpened, though that’s nothing new. It’s the point that’s innovative. In lieu of regular barbs that protrude out, the super-tiny “barbs” on the Marutos are notched into the hook. It’s not easy to see, in fact, it’s easier to feel them. If you look at the top right corner of the photo, the illustration on the package shows you what’s going on. . . . read more

Have you ever fished a Rattle Trap, swim bait or jig? Why not all three at once? Castalia Outdoors has produced perhaps the best of all of these with the new Trick Fisch. After having a chance to throw one, I now know what all the hype is about …

The rattling head and chamber in the tail drives fish crazy. The rattle has long been a fish catching factor for many types of baits, but combine that with the motion of a swim bait that actually swims without rolling and twisting is hard to find. This bait cures those frustrations and will likely save you money on broken rods due to throwing in a heated frustration (not that I have done such a thing).

The colors are spot on. The weight will carry the bait in the heaviest of winds, when I actually like throwing these style baits. Before, I would often end up being wrapped around my own line while my “light” swim bait would flutter just ten feet from the boat. Much due to the inability of casting a near weightless bait in a gust of wind.

While trying to “feel” the bottom and detect just what my graph is showing in deeper water, I like to grab a jig … not having one on the deck of my boat the other day, I grabbed the big Trick Fisch and went to work discovering a few large rocks, a barrel and lastly a sign reading “Bass Motel, No Vacancy.” I set the hook and the fight was on. Dragging this bait along the bottom, I realized the weighted head and design allowed it to stay upright while looking like a feeding baitfish. YATZSI!

Fish ON!

Castalia, located in Central Florida, is part of Paladin Companies with offices also in Germany and China. Since 1985, the Paladin product line has grown to include more than 5,000 fishing-related items, 15 trademarked brands, and numerous worldwide design and product patents. Included in its innovative lineup is Liquid Steel, the world’s first micro-braided steel leader, and the Sharkfin spinning reel, the world’s first spinning-reel design that casts further and prevents tangles. To date, an estimated 250,000 anglers worldwide have enjoyed the benefits of Sharkfin reels. Castalia Outdoors provides the marketing, sales and distribution of quality outdoor related products for the fishing and outdoor sports industries in North America, including the Sharkfin brand, plus Liquid Casting Braid, Liquid Steel Leader, Trick Fisch and Easy Net. The addition of Maruto hooks to Castalia’s product line was revealed during China Fish 2010, where Castalia’s new Sharkfin reel won the award for Best Of Show.

Castalia will introduce its new line of Maruto hooks during ICAST 2010. Mike Richards, managing partner of Castalia Outdoors, believes the proven quality and success of Dohitomi Company and the Maruto brand will continue in North America. Mike told us: “Castalia will carry a complete line of Maruto Hooks, including a patented semi-barbless hook system with a ‘lock/unlock’ feature that is like no other barbless hook.

The hook is easier to set compared to traditional barbed hooks, and therefore allows a higher percentage of hook-ups, yet it’s easy to ‘unlock’, resulting in minimal harm to the fish (and to fishermen). The new Maruto semi-barbless hook is patented and patent pending worldwide including Asia, Europe and the United States.

Castalia Outdoors has been putting the new Sharkfin reel through its paces in US waters.

The American distributor, which made its debut to the trade at ICAST 2009, has been putting the reel into the hands of some of Florida’s top saltwater guides.

The results have been overwhelming, with the guides reporting zero tangles but casts that go 20 to 30 percent further when compared with traditional spinning reels, according to Castalia.

Michael Richards, president of Castalia Outdoors, told TTW: “The guides caught some big redfish and tarpon and really put the reels through their paces.

LIQUID CASTING BRAID AND SHARKFIN REEL

ICAST VIDEO REVIEW

Cast Farther, Smoother and More Accurately! Its DIFFERENT – our proprietary liquid lamination process interlocks super line strands through a layering and in-line molding method creating the perfect blend of line roundness, smoothness and strength. The resulting smooth finish and ultra-small diameter of Liquid Casting Braid allow for longer, more accurate casts and excellent lure presentation. And the low stretch allows for just the right finesse sensitivity and quick hooksets. Available in Hi-Vis and Lo-Vis Green, 125 and 330 yard spools, 8 40 lb. test. Great for both spinning and baitcasting applications. . . . . watch more

LIQUID STEEL LEADER AND SHARKFIN REEL REVIEW

Castalia Outdoors, Inc. introduces Liquid Steel Leader. Unlike other leaders, Liquid Steel is ultra-thin, yet super strong. The German- made 1:19 steel provides the ultimate in strength and durability, yet is an exceptional value. No twisting, crimping or clamping is needed with Liquid Steel, and the lower stretch properties make for perfect sensitivity allowing for quick hooksets . . . . read more
